About Yuanmou Air Base
Yuanmou Air Base is a dual-use military and civil aviation facility serving Yuanmou County in the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. It is located in the wide, arid Yuanmou Basin within the Jinsha River valley of central Yunnan.
Originally established as a military installation, the airfield has been progressively opened to civil and general aviation to support regional connectivity in an underserved part of Yunnan. Its single paved runway is about 2,800 metres long, and the site sits at an elevation of roughly 1,161 metres.
The air base lies about 5 km northeast of Yuanmou city centre and approximately 200 km north of Kunming. Ground access is typically by pre-arranged private car or taxi, with the short city transfer taking around 15 minutes.
Commercial traffic is limited: the airfield mainly handles military, general aviation and coordinated charter operations, while regular scheduled passenger services are available through Kunming Changshui International Airport. Travellers using YUA should arrange handling and ground transport in advance.
