The airport sits in the Ili River valley about 12 kilometres east of Xinyuan county town, close to Nalati Grassland and within reach of Bayanbulak Swan Lake and Tangbula. It is a 4C-class civil airport with a single passenger terminal and a runway that can accommodate regional and medium-sized aircraft.
Road connections link the airport with Xinyuan and surrounding scenic areas, and onward travel is typically by taxi, private transfer, chartered vehicle or rental car. Its location makes it a useful arrival point for travellers visiting the Ili region.
