About Vincent Fayks Airport
Vincent Fayks Airport is a small airstrip serving Paloemeu, an Amerindian village on the Tapanahony River in Suriname's Sipaliwini District. The airport was built as part of Operation Grasshopper and is named after Polish pilot Vincent Fajks, who died at the site in October 1959 while delivering building materials for the airstrip.
The airport has a single grass runway of about 650 metres and mainly handles domestic charter flights between Paramaribo's Zorg en Hoop Airport and the southern interior. Charter operators such as Blue Wing Airlines and Gum Air connect the capital with Paloemeu and nearby destinations.
Because there is no direct road link to the coast, the airstrip is one of the main ways to reach Paloemeu. After landing, travelers typically continue by boat along the Tapanahony River to jungle lodges and the Kasikasima mountain region.
Passenger facilities are minimal, reflecting the airport's role as a remote interior landing strip. Travelers should confirm flights, lodge transfers and supplies in advance and expect a simple, outdoor arrival experience.
