About Wanica
Wanica is a district of northern Suriname that borders the capital Paramaribo and forms a fast-growing suburban, agricultural and commercial belt around it. Its capital, Lelydorp, is the country's second-largest city and sits along the main road corridor linking Paramaribo with the southern interior and Zanderij airport.
Lelydorp began as the village of Kofidjompo, named after an escaped enslaved man, and was later renamed after Dutch governor and engineer Cornelis Lely. Today Wanica is one of Suriname's most diverse districts, with a large Javanese community alongside Creole, Hindustani, Indigenous, Maroon and other residents, reflected in its mosques, Hindu temples, churches and roadside food stalls.
The main commercial and transport spine is Indira Gandhiweg, where Lelydorp's lively market, shops, warungs and small businesses concentrate. Nearby attractions include the Neotropical Butterfly Park, local rice paddies and the Peperpot Nature Park a short drive east. Subdivisions such as Kwatta, Domburg, Houttuin, Saramacca Polder and De Nieuwe Grond give the district a mix of older villages, new housing and farmland.
Wanica functions largely as a commuter and service district for Paramaribo while retaining strong roots in rice farming, horticulture and small trade. It also plays a practical role for visitors as a convenient stopping point between the capital and the airport, with guesthouses, restaurants, fuel stations and services along the main roads.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Wanica offers an accessible introduction to everyday Surinamese life, local Javanese and Creole cooking, and a quieter base within easy reach of Paramaribo's museums, colonial centre and riverfront.

Wanica Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier periods from February to April and August to November are the most comfortable for exploring Wanica and Lelydorp. Heavy rains between the dry seasons can make some side roads muddy, but the main roads remain usable year-round.
How to Get Around
Minibuses and taxis connect Lelydorp and other parts of Wanica with Paramaribo along the Indira Gandhiweg corridor. A rental car or private driver is useful for reaching smaller ressorten, markets and nearby nature areas, while central Lelydorp is easy to cover on foot.
Where to Stay
Lelydorp has the widest choice of small hotels and guesthouses in Wanica, especially along and near Indira Gandhiweg. Staying here is practical for airport access and day trips, while Paramaribo offers more accommodation options only a short drive away.
Food & Drink
Wanica's food scene centres on Javanese warungs, roti shops and market stalls serving dishes such as pom, saoto soup, bami and nasi. The Lelydorp Market is a good place to find fresh produce, spices and Indo-Surinamese snacks.
