About Tepoe Airstrip

Tepoe Airstrip is a small remote airfield in southern Suriname serving Pelelu Tepu, a Trio indigenous village on the Upper Tapanahony River in the Sipaliwini District. It provides a vital air link for a community that is otherwise inaccessible by road, supporting supplies, medical evacuations and travel into the rainforest interior.

Located over 300 km south of Paramaribo, the airstrip is reached by small aircraft flights from Zorg en Hoop Airport, with a typical flight time of around 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is also used by eco-tourists and expedition groups heading to Mount Kasikasima and the surrounding Tapanahony region.

The facility is minimal, with a single grass runway of about 720 metres, a small open-air shelter and no conventional terminal building. Operations are generally limited to daylight hours under visual flight rules, using short take-off and landing aircraft, and baggage is handled manually.

Onward travel from the airstrip is normally by foot or local river boat, and travelers should be largely self-sufficient. Despite its simplicity, the airstrip functions as the main gateway to this remote part of the Surinamese interior.
