About Thohoyandou Airport
Thohoyandou Airport, also known as P.R. Mphephu Airport, is a small airfield serving Thohoyandou and the Vhembe district in the north-eastern part of Limpopo province, South Africa. It was built during the era of the former Venda Republic and named after its former president, P.R. Mphephu.
The airport has a single runway of about 1,800 metres, a terminal building and a fire station. In the past it accommodated large and small aircraft and helicopters, and hosted air shows in the early 1990s; today it mainly handles general and private aviation rather than scheduled passenger services.
The airport lies near Vuwani, roughly 18 km southwest of Thohoyandou town centre. Travel between the airport and surrounding towns is made by road, using private transfers, taxis, chauffeur services or rental cars.
After falling into disrepair and closing in 2021, the airport became the subject of provincial revival plans aimed at refurbishing the facility and restoring its role as a gateway for the Vhembe region. Travellers should check the current operational status before planning a journey.
