About Northern Cape
Kimberley is the capital and largest city of South Africa's Northern Cape province, best known as the historic centre of the country's diamond rush. Set on the dry western Highveld, it combines a compact heritage core with a working mining and agricultural hinterland and a growing role as a regional education and administrative hub.
The city grew almost overnight after diamonds were discovered in 1871, and its famous Big Hole remains a powerful reminder of that era. The hand-dug mine, 463 metres wide and excavated to about 240 metres, anchors a museum and viewing platform complex, while the De Beers legacy, Cecil Rhodes and early industrialisation shaped much of Kimberley's character.
Landmarks are concentrated around the old centre and include the McGregor Museum, William Humphreys Art Gallery, the Honoured Dead Memorial and the restored Victorian buildings of the Belgravia historic district. The township of Galeshewe offers community-based tours and adds a distinctive contemporary layer to the city.
Kimberley is also a practical business destination. It is the seat of the Northern Cape legislature, home to Sol Plaatje University and a base for diamond, mining, agriculture, logistics and government services across a vast province. Conferences, agricultural expos and heritage events bring a steady stream of visitors.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Kimberley offers an unusual mix of mining history, museum culture and access to the Northern Cape's wide-open landscapes, from the Magersfontein battlefield to the region's game farms and Karoo towns.
