About North West
Rustenburg is the largest city in South Africa's North West province and a major centre of the country's platinum mining industry. Set at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountains about 120 km northwest of Johannesburg, the city combines a working mining economy with easy access to Sun City, the Pilanesberg National Park and the Magaliesberg outdoor recreation areas.
Founded by Voortrekkers in 1851, Rustenburg grew from a farming and church settlement into one of the world's most important platinum-producing hubs. The surrounding Bushveld Complex supplies much of the world's platinum group metals, and the Royal Bafokeng Nation plays a significant role in the region's mining, development and community life. The Royal Bafokeng Stadium, a 2010 FIFA World Cup venue, remains a landmark for sports and events.
The city's central business district and the Waterfall Mall area offer shopping, banking and services, while residential suburbs such as Safari Gardens, Protea Park and Cashan provide a quieter base. Nearby Phokeng, the seat of the Royal Bafokeng, and the mining town of Marikana reflect the region's industrial and cultural layers. Kgaswane Mountain Reserve protects Magaliesberg trails, waterfalls and wildlife within easy reach of the city.
Leisure travellers come for safaris in the nearby Pilanesberg National Park, the resort attractions of Sun City and outdoor activities in the Magaliesberg, including hiking, game drives and scenic drives. Business visitors are drawn by mining, engineering, retail and government services, and the city hosts conferences, sports events and corporate activity throughout the year. Restaurants range from South African steakhouses and braai spots to mall dining and international chains.
For both leisure and business travellers, Rustenburg works as a practical base between Johannesburg and the North West's safari and resort destinations. Private transfers, car rental and charter vehicles make it easy to reach mines, business parks, stadiums and the region's nature reserves.
