About Pilanesberg International Airport
Pilanesberg International Airport is a small international airport in the North West Province of South Africa, located close to Sun City resort and Pilanesberg National Park. Opened in 1981, it was built to provide direct access to the then-new Sun City resort and the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, and it has since served as a gateway for tourism to the region.
The airport is situated roughly 10 km from Sun City and about 36 km north of Rustenburg, near the scenic ancient volcanic crater of the Pilanesberg. It features a single asphalt runway of approximately 2,750 metres that can accommodate wide-body aircraft, and it has historically supported domestic flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as selected international and charter traffic.
In August 2023, a fire destroyed the main terminal building and halted major commercial operations. Redevelopment of the airport, including a new terminal building, is being planned by the North West provincial government to restore connectivity for Sun City and the surrounding game reserves.
Road access is straightforward: Sun City is reached by car, taxi or shuttle in about 15 to 20 minutes, and the regional route via the R556 connects the area with Rustenburg and Johannesburg. Once redevelopment is complete, the airport is expected to resume its role as the most convenient arrival point for visitors to Sun City and Pilanesberg National Park.
