About Thanjavur Air Force Station
Thanjavur Air Force Station is an Indian Air Force base serving the city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and the wider Cauvery Delta region. The airfield has a long history, dating back to the Second World War, and has since been developed into a strategic military installation in southern India.
Located about 12 km southwest of central Thanjavur near Pilaiyarpatti, the station was taken over by the Indian Air Force in 1990 and inaugurated as a full-fledged air force station in May 2013. It is home to the No. 222 'Tigersharks' Squadron, which operates Su-30MKI fighter aircraft and was formally re-raised at Thanjavur in January 2020.
Road links connect the base to Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Tiruchirappalli and other towns in the delta, while taxis, private transfers and car rental provide onward travel options from the city and surrounding areas.
Although it is primarily a military airfield, a domestic passenger terminal has been proposed under India's UDAN regional connectivity scheme, and the Airports Authority of India has cleared the terminal design. The station therefore functions as a regional aviation gateway in addition to its defense role.
