Varanasi's international airport serves as the primary air gateway to the holy city and the wider eastern Uttar Pradesh region. The airport is located at Babatpur, roughly 26 km northwest of central Varanasi. The site was originally established in 1924, renamed after former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 2005 and granted international status in 2012.
