About Tarama Airport
Tarama Airport is a small regional airport serving Tarama Island, located in the Miyako District of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Situated at the western end of the island, it provides an essential air link for residents and visitors. The current airport opened on 10 October 2003, replacing the earlier Tarama airfield, and now operates a 1,500-metre runway.
The airport is about 3.5 km from the village centre at Shiokawa, with a compact terminal building that combines departure and arrival functions in a single ground-floor lobby. Passenger facilities include a shop, a coffee stand and a free rooftop observation deck.
Ryukyu Air Commuter operates scheduled flights between Tarama and Miyako Airport, typically twice daily, with a flight time of around 20 minutes. Charter connections to Ishigaki are also available on a limited schedule.
For onward travel, a village-run paid transport service links the airport with the village centre and the island's ports, and many guesthouses offer airport pickup. Public buses and taxis are not available on the island, so visitors usually arrange transport in advance.
