About Suzhou Guangfu Airport
Suzhou Guangfu Airport is a People's Liberation Army Air Force base serving the city of Suzhou in eastern China's Jiangsu province. Also known as Suzhou West Airfield, it sits in Guangfu town in Wuzhong District, about 22 kilometres southwest of central Suzhou and close to the eastern shore of Taihu Lake.
The airfield opened in October 1975 as a military installation. From February 1994, it also handled limited civil flights, including connections between Suzhou, Beijing and Foshan, before its civil transport function closed in October 2002. The site has since operated as a military airfield.
The airfield is reached from Suzhou by road, with the airport road linking it to the Shanghai–Nanjing Expressway and National Highway 312. Because it does not currently serve scheduled commercial passenger flights, most travellers flying to Suzhou use nearby commercial airports such as Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Pudong and Sunan Shuofang International Airport in Wuxi.
For visitors, the location provides a useful reference point for travel around Suzhou, Wuxi and the wider Yangtze River Delta, with ground transport options connecting the Guangfu area to the city centre and regional destinations.
