About Songwe Airport
Songwe Airport is the main airport serving Mbeya and the wider Southern Highlands region of Tanzania. Opened on 13 December 2012, it replaced the older Mbeya Airport and became a more modern gateway for the area, with a 3,300-metre runway capable of handling larger aircraft.
Located about 25 km southwest of Mbeya city centre and off the A104 trunk road, the airport primarily handles scheduled domestic flights to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, operated by Air Tanzania and Precision Air. It is also positioned near the route toward the Tanzanian border with Zambia.
Passenger services are centred on a single terminal, and a newly completed terminal building has increased handling capacity. Basic facilities include a café, waiting areas, shops and check-in services, while ongoing upgrades aim to support the airport's planned role as an international gateway.
Travelers can reach Mbeya and nearby areas by taxi, private transfer or rental car, with onward road links continuing toward other towns in the Southern Highlands and the Kasumulu/Songwe border crossing.
