About Njombe

Njombe is the regional capital of Njombe Region and a cool, green highland town in Tanzania's Southern Highlands. Set at nearly 2,000 metres on the edge of the Kipengere Range, it is surrounded by rolling hills, tea and timber estates, and forested slopes that give the town a distinctly fresh, rural character.

The town's landmarks reflect its missionary and farming heritage. The century-old Yakobi church and the old Lutheran church at Lupembe are well-known historical buildings, while the Nyumba Nitu natural forest and caves, about 15 kilometres from town, combine forest walks with local cultural stories.

Njombe is also a gateway to the Southern Highlands' scenic attractions. Kitulo National Park, sometimes called the Garden of God, protects montane grasslands rich in orchids and wildflowers, and the Mpanga Kipengere Game Reserve is known for waterfalls and highland scenery. Lake Nyasa's shores in Ludewa District lie further south.

Tea, coffee, timber, wattle and highland vegetables such as round potatoes underpin the local economy, alongside agro-processing and regional administration. The town is a transit point on the T6 trunk road between Makambako, on the TAZARA railway and T1 highway, and Songea, making it a practical stop for road journeys across the south.

For travellers, Njombe offers a quieter, cool-climate alternative to Tanzania's better-known destinations, with opportunities for hiking, waterfall visits, tea estate scenery and cultural history, while remaining convenient for business, transit and onward travel.

Njombe Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from June to October offers the clearest skies, cool highland weather and easier travel on rural roads. The rainy season from November to May turns the landscape lush and green, while December to April is the best window for wildflower displays in Kitulo National Park.

How to Get Around

Njombe's compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with taxis, motorcycle taxis and local minibuses for shorter trips. Buses connect the town with Makambako, Iringa, Mbeya, Songea and Dar es Salaam, while private cars or hired drivers are the most practical way to reach waterfalls, Kitulo National Park and other outlying attractions.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is concentrated in and around the town centre, ranging from simple guesthouses to small hotels. For a quieter stay, lodges and guesthouses near tea estates and along routes to Kitulo and Makete offer a more scenic base, though high-end options remain limited.

Food & Drink

Njombe's highland farms supply avocados, round potatoes, vegetables, tea and coffee that shape the local food culture. Meals typically feature ugali, beans, greens and grilled meat, with small restaurants, cafés and markets offering simple, affordable dining across the town.
