About Zanzibar South
Zanzibar South, also known as Unguja South Region, covers the southern part of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago. The destination is best known for its relaxed fishing villages, wide white-sand beaches and shallow tidal lagoons, with Paje and Jambiani among the most popular coastal bases on the island.
The region has a strong Swahili coastal heritage, visible in old mosques, dhow-building traditions, fishing and seaweed farming. Kizimkazi is home to one of East Africa's oldest Islamic sites, the Kizimkazi Mosque with its 12th-century inscription, while the nearby Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park protects red colobus monkeys and coastal forest.
Paje is the centre for kitesurfing and has a lively beach scene, while Jambiani offers a quieter, more village-like stay along a long beach with tidal pools and seaweed farms. Further south, Kizimkazi is known for dolphin trips, and landmarks such as Kuza Cave and The Rock restaurant at Pingwe add variety to a visit.
Tourism, fishing and seaweed farming shape the local economy, and the south coast's boutique hotels, small restaurants and watersports schools have made it one of Zanzibar's leading leisure destinations. It suits travellers looking for beach time, water sports, village life and a slower pace than the busier north coast.

Best Time to Visit
The dry season from June to October brings sunny days, lower humidity and calm seas, making it the most comfortable period for beach time and swimming. December to February is hotter and popular for kitesurfing winds, while the long rains from March to May are quieter and often wet.
How to Get Around
Shared dala-dala minibuses connect villages along the main road, but they are slow and basic. Most visitors use taxis, rented scooters or cars, or pre-booked private transfers to move between beaches, Stone Town and the airport.
Where to Stay
Paje suits kitesurfers and travellers wanting beach bars and social energy, while Jambiani is more relaxed and family-friendly. Michamvi and Kizimkazi offer quieter, more secluded stays with smaller lodges and boutique hotels.
Food & Drink
Coastal restaurants in Paje and Jambiani serve grilled seafood, Swahili curries, octopus and fresh tropical fruit, often right on the beach. Local eateries and night markets offer affordable dishes, while spots such as The Rock at Pingwe provide a memorable setting.
