About Kigoma Airport

Kigoma Airport is a small domestic airport serving Kigoma, a lakeside town in western Tanzania. Opened during the colonial era in 1954, it supports air travel for the town, the surrounding Kigoma Region and the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika.

The airport lies about 5 km from the Kigoma town centre and provides domestic connections, including scheduled flights to Dar es Salaam, Tabora and Mwanza operated by domestic carriers. It also serves as a practical arrival point for visitors heading to the chimpanzee habitats of Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park.

The airport has a single passenger terminal and one paved runway of roughly 1,800 metres, suitable for light to medium-sized aircraft. Its compact apron handles a limited number of aircraft, and the terminal offers basic passenger services.

Kigoma Airport is reached mainly by taxi, private transfer or rental car, with the town centre, Ujiji, the railway station and the lake port all a short drive away. Tanzania Airports Authority manages the airport, and planned upgrades aim to expand the terminal, apron and runway as regional air travel grows.
