About Kigoma

Kigoma is a lakeside city in western Tanzania and the capital of Kigoma Region, set on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake and Africa's deepest. Known as a gateway to chimpanzee trekking and historic exploration sites, it has a relaxed port-town character distinct from the northern safari circuit.

The city's history centres on Ujiji, a nearby suburb where Arab and Swahili caravan traders once ran a major ivory and slave-trading hub at the end of the Central Trade Route. It gained worldwide attention in November 1871, when journalist Henry Morton Stanley met the ailing explorer David Livingstone here with the famous words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" The Livingstone Memorial and a small museum mark the site today.

Kigoma's strongest draws are natural: Lake Tanganyika's sandy coves and clear waters, Gombe Stream National Park about 15 to 20 km to the north, and Mahale Mountains National Park further south. Gombe became famous through Jane Goodall's long-term chimpanzee research, and both parks offer guided chimpanzee trekking, forest hiking, birding and lakeside beaches. The century-old MV Liemba, a former German steamer still plying the lake, is a living piece of regional history.

The town itself centres on the railway station, busy lake port, markets and a small airport, with Ujiji retaining an older Swahili character. Fish markets, lakeside restaurants and sunset boat trips shape everyday life, while the port connects Kigoma by water with destinations along the lake.

For travellers, Kigoma works as a practical base for the national parks, the Livingstone sites and ferry or rail journeys, while its port economy and growing trade links give it quiet business relevance in western Tanzania.

Kigoma Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from June to October offers warm, mostly dry weather ideal for chimpanzee trekking in Gombe and Mahale and for enjoying Lake Tanganyika. Rainy months from November to May bring greener landscapes but can make trails and remote roads harder to navigate.

How to Get Around

Kigoma town is compact enough to explore on foot, by motorbike taxi, tuk-tuk or taxi. For Gombe Stream, boats depart from the Kigoma harbour, while Mahale is usually reached by boat or charter flight; buses and shared taxis connect the town with Ujiji and nearby areas.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster in central Kigoma near the lake, port and railway station, with a few lodges outside town. Ujiji and the lakeshore offer quieter options, while Gombe and Mahale have park lodges and camps for multi-day visits.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on lake fish such as dagaa and tilapia, often served with ugali, rice, beans and greens. Kigoma's fish market, lakeside restaurants and simple cafés provide fresh seafood and Swahili dishes, with small bars and tea stalls adding to the local scene.
