About Songwe
Songwe is a region in southwestern Tanzania's Southern Highlands, established in 2016 from the western part of Mbeya Region. Its administrative centre is Vwawa, a busy market town on the Tanzam Highway. Rolling highlands, volcanic hills and border corridors to Zambia and Malawi define the area.
The region's history is visible in ancient rock paintings, the "Nyayo za Watu wa Kale" (footprints of ancient people) near Galula, and colonial-era sites. The Mbozi Meteorite, one of the world's largest meteorites, lies on the southwestern slope of Marengi Hill and is the region's best-known attraction.
Vwawa functions as the main commercial and transport hub, while Tunduma is a lively border town linking Tanzania and Zambia through the Tanzam Highway and TAZARA railway. Other districts such as Mbozi, Ileje, Momba and Songwe offer highland farmland, tea and coffee plantations, and small rural markets.
The economy is built on agriculture—coffee, tea, maize, beans and livestock—plus cross-border trade and logistics. Songwe Airport (MBI), about 20 km west of Mbeya and roughly 50 km from Vwawa, serves as the main air gateway for the Southern Highlands.
For travellers, Songwe offers an off-the-beaten-path introduction to Tanzania's highlands, with scenic drives, hiking, hot springs in the Rukwa Rift, and easy overland connections to Zambia and Malawi. It suits business visitors involved in trade and transport as well as leisure travellers seeking a less crowded side of southern Tanzania.

Songwe Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to October is the most comfortable time to explore Songwe, with cooler highland temperatures and better road conditions. The green season from November to April brings heavier rain, but the landscape becomes lush and some rural roads can turn muddy.
How to Get Around
Vwawa and Tunduma are connected by the Tanzam Highway, with buses, daladalas and taxis linking main towns. Private transfers, chauffeur services and rental cars are useful for reaching rural attractions, while motorcycles and walking work well inside towns.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is in Vwawa and Tunduma, where guesthouses, lodges and small hotels suit both transit and business travellers. Mbeya, about 70 km east of Vwawa, offers a wider range of hotels for those using Songwe Airport as a base.
Food & Drink
Local meals centre on ugali, rice, beans, grilled meat and fish, with pilau, chapati and fresh vegetables widely available in Vwawa and Tunduma markets. Highland tea and coffee are regional staples, and roadside food stalls provide quick, affordable meals.
