Songea Airport (SGX)

Songea Airport is a domestic airport serving Songea and the wider Ruvuma Region in southern Tanzania. Located around 7 km from Songea town centre, it is the main air gateway for the region and connects the area with scheduled flights operated mainly by Air Tanzania to Dar es Salaam.

The airport was built between 1974 and 1980. Its runway has since been expanded and upgraded to a tarmac surface of about 1,740 metres, allowing improved operations in different seasons and handling of larger regional aircraft. Recent improvements have also included control tower, taxiway and apron works, while plans continue for a new passenger terminal.

The airport currently operates through a single passenger terminal, with a temporary terminal facility being prepared while permanent infrastructure is developed. Handling capacity is modest, reflecting its role as a regional domestic airport.

Road access to Songea town is available by taxi, private transfer or local transport. On arrival, passengers can continue to the town centre and surrounding districts of the Ruvuma Region.
