About Ruvuma
Songea is the capital of Tanzania's Ruvuma Region and the main urban centre of the southwestern highlands. Set at roughly 900 to 1,100 metres above sea level along the A19 road, it acts as an administrative, trading and transport hub for a region that borders Mozambique along the Ruvuma River.
Named after the Ngoni leader Songea Mbano, the city is closely tied to the Maji Maji rebellion of 1905–1907. The Maji Maji Memorial Museum and the nearby memorial tower commemorate the uprising, while the tomb of Chief Songea stands just outside the town.
Songea is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Songea, and nearby Peramiho grew around a historic Benedictine mission. Neighbourhoods spread out from the central market and bus station, with the Matogoro Hills rising to the south and small green spaces such as Ruhila Wildlife Garden inside the municipality.
The city's economy revolves around regional trade, government services, agriculture and processing, with maize, coffee, tobacco and timber among the surrounding products. Markets, local restaurants and modest hotels serve residents and visitors heading toward the Ruvuma River or Liparamba Game Reserve.
For leisure and business travellers, Songea is a practical regional gateway: it offers domestic air links through Songea Airport, long-distance bus connections and a base for exploring the history, highland scenery and wildlife of southern Tanzania.

Ruvuma Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from June to October offers the most reliable weather for travel and sightseeing around Songea, with clearer roads and cooler highland conditions. February is also significant for the annual Maji Maji commemoration, although rain can make some routes heavier.
How to Get Around
Songea is small enough to cross by taxi, boda boda motorcycle taxis and shared minibuses known as dala dala. For wider exploration of Ruvuma Region, private vehicles, hired cars with drivers and local buses connect the municipality to districts, villages and natural sites.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is concentrated around the town centre near the market, bus station and A19 road, ranging from simple guesthouses to mid-range hotels. Staying centrally keeps the Maji Maji Memorial Museum, shops, banks and local restaurants within easy reach.
Food & Drink
Songea's food scene centres on Tanzanian staples such as ugali, rice, beans, grilled meat and fresh vegetables, served in local hotels and roadside eateries. Markets supply seasonal fruit and produce, while cafés and bars offer tea, coffee and a low-key evening scene.
