Sion Airport (SIR)

Sion Airport is a regional civil and military airport serving the city of Sion and the Valais region in south-western Switzerland. Opened in 1935, it provides an important alpine gateway for travellers heading to the region’s ski resorts and mountain destinations.

Located about 2.5 km southwest of central Sion on the Rhône valley floor, the airport operates a single passenger terminal and a 2,000-metre runway shared with the Swiss Air Force. The compact terminal handles seasonal and charter flights alongside a significant volume of private aviation, with quick passenger processing and short distances between the aircraft and the exit.

The airport has no dedicated railway station, but Sion’s main railway station is about 2.5 km away in the city centre. Local buses, taxis, private transfers and road links connect the airport to Sion and the wider Swiss rail network, making onward travel to destinations such as Verbier, Crans-Montana, Zermatt and the 4 Vallées straightforward.

With a restaurant, VIP lounges and parking beside the terminal, Sion Airport functions as a practical, small-scale gateway for both leisure and business travellers visiting the Valais region.
