About Sigiriya Airport
Sigiriya Airport is an air force base and domestic airport in central Sri Lanka, located near the city of Dambulla. It serves as a convenient gateway to the cultural triangle, including the UNESCO-listed Sigiriya Rock, Dambulla cave temple and Polonnaruwa, and supports both military operations and commercial domestic flights.
The airfield was first established by the Royal Air Force in 1942 during World War II and was later abandoned in 1946. It was reopened on 19 April 1985 as a Sri Lanka Air Force station and has since been used to support medium and light transport aircraft, with commercial operators using the airfield because of its proximity to Sigiriya Rock.
The airport sits close to Sigiriya village, about 3 km from Sigiriya Rock and roughly 15 km from Dambulla. Road connections make it possible to continue to local hotels, cultural sites and nearby towns by taxi, private transfer, chauffeur service or rental car.
With a single asphalt runway and a compact passenger terminal, the airport offers straightforward arrivals and departures for travellers exploring central Sri Lanka. Most passenger services are domestic, with scheduled flights operated by Cinnamon Air.
