About China Bay Airport
China Bay Airport is a combined Sri Lanka Air Force base and domestic airport serving Trincomalee and the surrounding eastern province. Located about 7 km southwest of the city centre, it provides the quickest air link between Colombo and Sri Lanka's east coast for travellers heading to the beaches around Nilaveli and Uppuveli.
The site dates back to the British colonial period, when it was established as RAF China Bay, and it was bombed by Japanese aircraft on 9 April 1942 during the Second World War. After independence it was transferred to the Royal Ceylon Air Force and later became SLAF China Bay, which today also houses the Sri Lanka Air Force Academy.
Passenger operations are handled through one compact terminal alongside the military base, with domestic flights operated mainly by Cinnamon Air connecting Trincomalee to Colombo and other domestic points. The small scale of the airport keeps check-in, security and boarding relatively quick.
