About Uva
Uva Province is one of Sri Lanka's nine provinces, set in the southeastern interior between the Central and Eastern highlands. It is among the country's least populated provinces, yet it packs hill-country scenery, tea plantations, waterfalls and the edges of major national parks into two districts: Badulla and Monaragala. The provincial capital is Badulla, while the hillside town of Ella has become the region's best-known traveller base.
The region's character is shaped by tea country and the railway era. The Colombo-to-Badulla rail line climbs through cloud forests, tunnels and viaducts, and the Nine Arches Bridge near Ella is a landmark of colonial engineering. Uva's Kandyan-era heritage survives at sites such as the Bogoda wooden bridge, Muthiyangana Temple in Badulla and the ancient rock carvings at Buduruwagala.
Waterfalls define much of Uva's landscape, including Dunhinda Falls near Badulla, Diyaluma Falls and the Ramayana-linked Ravana Falls near Ella. Hikers head to Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock for sunrise views, while the highlands around Haputale and Bandarawela offer cooler air and sweeping tea estates. To the south, parts of Yala and Gal Oya national parks bring wildlife and safari access within reach of Monaragala.
Beyond scenery, Uva is a working tea and agricultural region, and its growing tourism economy supports guesthouses, cafés, guides and local transport around Badulla, Ella and Bandarawela. The mix of hill-country climate, heritage sites and wildlife makes it relevant for leisure travellers, small-group tours and business visitors attending regional events or exploring Sri Lanka beyond the coast.
Whether arriving for trekking, tea estate visits, photography or quieter highland stays, Uva offers a distinctive inland contrast to Sri Lanka's beaches and cities.
