Shonai Airport is a regional airport serving Sakata and Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture, acting as the main air gateway to the Shonai region along Japan's Sea of Japan coast. Opened in 1991 after long-standing local efforts to improve access to Tokyo and Osaka, it gives travellers a direct link to the capital that previously required half a day by land.
The airport has a single runway and one compact, three-storey passenger terminal. Scheduled domestic flights connect Shonai with Tokyo, making the airport an important link for both business and leisure travel to and from the Tohoku region.
