About Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport
Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport is the only commercial airport in Nagano Prefecture and serves as a compact regional gateway to Matsumoto and the surrounding Shinshu region. Opened in 1965, it is Japan's highest-elevation commercial airport at 657.5 metres and primarily handles domestic flights.
Located about 9 km southwest of central Matsumoto, the airport has a single passenger terminal that opened in 1994. It connects travellers with Fuji Dream Airlines services to Sapporo, Fukuoka and Kobe, plus seasonal flights to Osaka Itami, making it a practical option for domestic journeys.
An airport shuttle bus links the terminal with Matsumoto Bus Terminal next to Matsumoto Station in around 30 minutes, while taxis and rental cars offer direct onward travel. Road access is convenient from the Nagano Expressway.
The terminal provides check-in counters, a departure lounge, shops, restaurants, Wi-Fi, parking and an observation deck. Its location makes it a useful starting point for Matsumoto Castle, Kamikochi, the North Japan Alps and the Hakuba ski resorts.
