About Santa Cruz Air Force Base
Santa Cruz Air Force Base is a Brazilian Air Force installation in the Santa Cruz district of Rio de Janeiro, roughly 54 km west of the city centre. It is best known for the historic Bartolomeu de Gusmão Airport complex, opened in December 1936 to support rigid airship operations including the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg.
Today the base operates as ALA12 and serves mainly military aviation, with a joint civil-military role and limited civilian access. Its asphalt runway is about 2,739 m long, and the site remains an active centre for defence and patrol operations rather than a regular commercial passenger gateway. Most scheduled passenger flights for Rio de Janeiro use Galeão International Airport and Santos Dumont Airport.
The base is reached by road from Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, including Avenida Brasil and surrounding routes, with travel times to the city centre depending on traffic. Visitors and authorized travellers should arrange access and onward transportation in advance because public terminal services are limited.
Terminal Overview
Terminals
Santa Cruz Air Force Base does not operate a conventional public passenger terminal complex. The site is primarily a Brazilian Air Force base with limited civil and operational facilities, and civilian or general aviation access is normally coordinated in advance.
