About Sado Airport
Sado Airport is a small public aerodrome on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, serving the city of Sado and the surrounding island communities. It opened in 1958 and has historically provided a domestic air link between the island and Niigata on the mainland.
The airport is located about 4 km southwest of Ryotsu, the main port town and centre of Sado City, and is classified as a third-class airport under Japanese law. It has a single small terminal, a short 890-metre runway and limited aircraft parking, reflecting its role as a compact regional airfield.
Scheduled passenger service, most recently operated by New Japan Aviation on the route to Niigata Airport, has been suspended since April 2014. The airport is connected to Ryotsu by road, and the short distance makes taxi access to the town and ferry terminal relatively quick.
Despite limited amenities, Sado Airport remains an entry point for the island, with basic terminal facilities and onward travel options for visitors exploring Sado's coastal and cultural destinations.
