About Rugao Air Base
Rugao Air Base is a military airfield located near Rugao in Jiangsu Province, China, on the north side of the Yangtze River. It carries the IATA code RUG and ICAO code ZSRG and forms part of the People's Liberation Army Air Force infrastructure, rather than functioning as a public commercial passenger airport.
During the early 1990s, the PLA Air Force developed a large aircraft storage and maintenance depot at Rugao to hold retired fighters, transport aircraft, and bombers; at the time it was described as one of the world's largest aircraft storage facilities. Today the airfield remains a military installation with restricted access.
The airfield sits about 20 km from downtown Rugao and is reached by local roads, with the city of Nantong and other parts of the Jiangsu region nearby. Because there is no scheduled civil passenger service, most travelers use Nantong Xingdong International Airport, roughly 50–60 km away, for commercial flights and continue by road to Rugao.
Visitors should not plan to use Rugao Air Base as a departure or arrival point, since public terminals, check-in, customs, and passenger facilities are not available.
