Qamdo Bangda Airport serves Qamdo (Chamdo) and the eastern Tibetan plateau. Opened in 1995, it sits at about 4,334 m above sea level and has long been known as one of the world's highest airports; its original 5,500 m runway was once the world's longest paved runway.
Located in the Bangda grassland of Baxoi County, the airport lies around 65 km from the Qamdo city centre and connects the region with domestic destinations such as Chengdu, Chongqing and Lhasa. As a civil-military joint airport, it mainly handles regional and domestic passenger traffic.
Travel between the airport and Qamdo is made by road, with buses, taxis and private transfers covering the mountain route in roughly one and a half to two hours depending on conditions.
