About Pakyong Airport
Pakyong Airport is the only airport in the Indian state of Sikkim and the main air gateway to Gangtok and the surrounding Himalayan region. Built as a greenfield airport, it is one of the five highest airports in India and was developed under the Government of India's regional connectivity scheme.
Located on a hilltop about 2 km from Pakyong town and roughly 30 km from central Gangtok, the airport sits at an elevation of about 4,646 feet. It was inaugurated on 24 September 2018 and began commercial flight operations on 4 October 2018.
The airport has a 1.7 km runway, a single passenger terminal of about 2,380 square metres, and an apron that can accommodate two Bombardier Q-400 or similar aircraft. The integrated terminal complex also includes an air traffic control tower cum fire station and vehicle parking.
Travellers typically continue to Gangtok by taxi, private transfer or rental car along hilly roads, with the journey depending on traffic and weather. The airport's location makes it a convenient alternative to the longer road journey from Bagdogra Airport in neighbouring West Bengal, and a scenic entry point for visitors exploring Sikkim.
