About Oita Airport
Oita Airport (OIT) is the main airport serving Oita Prefecture on Japan's Kyushu island. Located in Kunisaki City on the Kunisaki Peninsula, it handles domestic flights across Japan as well as a smaller number of international services.
The current airport opened on reclaimed coastal land in October 1971, and its international terminal opened in 1992. The terminal complex includes a domestic terminal and an international terminal, with check-in, arrivals, shops and dining spread across connected areas. In recent years the airport has also been branded as Oita Hello Kitty Airport for tourism purposes.
The airport lies about 30 km northeast of Oita city centre. Regular airport buses connect it to Oita Station in roughly 45–60 minutes, with services also running to Beppu and other parts of the prefecture, while taxis and rental cars are available for onward travel. A hovercraft service additionally links the airport area with Nishi-Oita.
The airport offers restaurants, cafés, shops, a lounge and an observation deck, making it a convenient gateway for visitors travelling to Oita's hot spring resorts in Beppu and Yufuin.
