About Nuwara Eliya (Lake Gregory) Waterdrome

Nuwara Eliya (Lake Gregory) Waterdrome is a seaplane base on Lake Gregory, an artificial lake near the hill-country town of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka's Central Province. The waterdrome serves as the main air gateway to Nuwara Eliya, connecting the region with Colombo and other destinations by scenic seaplane flights.

The lake itself was created in 1874 under Governor William Gregory, while scheduled seaplane operations began in early 2013 when Cinnamon Air established services to the lake. Today the waterdrome mainly handles domestic and charter flights, with services to Colombo-Bandaranaike and seasonal or charter links to coastal points such as Koggala.

Because it is an open water aerodrome, the facility has no conventional terminal building. Seaplanes use the lake surface for take-offs and landings, and passenger handling is arranged by the airline, making the experience compact and straightforward. The site sits at an elevation of about 1,875 metres, surrounded by the hills, tea plantations and cool climate for which Nuwara Eliya is known.

Lake Gregory lies roughly 2 km from the centre of Nuwara Eliya, so the town is within a short taxi or transfer ride. From the lake, travelers can reach Nuwara Eliya's hotels, the golf club, Horton Plains National Park, Hakgala Botanical Gardens and the surrounding tea country, making the waterdrome a convenient gateway to Sri Lanka's central highlands.
