About Major Henk Fernandes Airport
Major Henk Fernandes Airport is the main airport serving Nieuw Nickerie, the capital of the Nickerie district and the third largest city in Suriname. The airport has been in use since 1953, making it one of the oldest airports in the country, and is named after Major Henk Fernandes, who died in a helicopter crash in 1982.
The airport is a small regional facility with a single asphalt runway of about 700 metres, used mainly for charter flights to and from Paramaribo's Zorg en Hoop Airport. Operators such as Blue Wing Airlines and Gum Air connect the Nickerie district with the capital.
Located roughly six kilometres from the centre of Nieuw Nickerie, the airport is reached by local roads. The city is also the terminus of the East-West Link, the main road connecting the Nickerie district with Paramaribo and the coastal region.
Because it is a small regional airport, passenger facilities are basic, but its position makes it a practical entry point for travellers visiting Nieuw Nickerie and the surrounding rice-growing and coastal areas of northwestern Suriname.
