Ngorangora Airport (IRA)

Ngorangora Airport is a small domestic airstrip serving Kirakira, the provincial capital of Makira-Ulawa Province in the Solomon Islands. Also known as Kirakira Airport or Ngorangora Airstrip, it was built in the late 1950s and continues to link Makira Island with the rest of the country.

The airport lies about 3.6 km east of Kirakira on the north coast of Makira Island and handles regional turboprop services, primarily Solomon Airlines flights to and from Honiara. Its single unpaved runway is suited to aircraft such as the De Havilland Twin Otter, and operations can be affected by heavy tropical rain.

Passenger facilities are modest, with a single open-air terminal area used for check-in, arrivals and waiting. Because the airport is small and services are limited, travelers are advised to arrange onward transport and carry essential supplies with them.

For residents and visitors, Ngorangora Airport remains an important link for passengers, mail and cargo, providing a much faster alternative to sea travel between Makira Island and the capital.
