About Western

Gizo is the capital of Western Province and the main town of the New Georgia Islands in the Solomon Islands. Set on Ghizo Island beside a sheltered lagoon, it is the country's second-largest urban centre and the main gateway to the western Solomons' dive sites, wartime history and island communities.

The town has a relaxed Melanesian port character, with a busy waterfront, small shops, churches and a lively market. Pacific War history is close at hand: Kennedy Island, also called Plum Pudding Island, is where John F. Kennedy and his PT-109 crew came ashore in 1943, and the Japanese transport Toa Maru lies offshore as a major wreck dive.

Gizo's surrounding waters and islands are the region's greatest draw. Coral reefs, drop-offs and wrecks make it a diving and snorkelling centre, while boat trips reach Marovo Lagoon, the volcanic slopes of Kolombangara and the forests of Tetepare. Back in town, Gizo Market offers fresh fish, produce and everyday local goods.

Small hotels, guesthouses and island lodges cluster around the waterfront and on nearby islets, giving visitors a practical base. The local economy is modest and centres on fisheries, copra, trade, government services and tourism.

Whether visiting for diving, Pacific war history or provincial business, Gizo offers a compact and unhurried introduction to the western Solomon Islands.

Western Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier period from May to October is generally the most comfortable, with calmer seas and better conditions for diving, snorkelling and island trips. November to April is wetter and brings a higher risk of rough weather.

How to Get Around

Gizo town is compact and easy to explore on foot. Outboard motor canoes and small boats are the main way to reach nearby islands, dive sites and villages, while taxis and a limited number of vehicles serve local roads.

Where to Stay

Most visitors stay near the waterfront in small hotels, guesthouses or island lodges, including overwater bungalows on nearby islets. The town centre is convenient for the market and shops, while island stays suit divers and beach travellers.

Food & Drink

Fresh seafood, especially tuna and reef fish, features on many menus alongside rice, root vegetables, tropical fruit and Solomon Islands dishes. Gizo Market and the waterfront cafés and restaurants are the easiest places to sample local food.
