Viru Harbour Airstrip (VIU)

Viru Harbour Airstrip is a small domestic aerodrome serving the village of Viru on the south coast of New Georgia Island in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. It provides an air link between this remote part of the island group and the rest of the country, mainly through domestic and charter flights.

Located near Viru Harbour, the airstrip lies roughly 270 km northwest of Honiara, the national capital, within a region of lagoons, small communities and island lodges. The nearest larger airport with more regular connections is Munda, about 50 km away, while Gizo is further to the northwest.

The airstrip has a single soft-surface runway of about 640 metres and minimal ground infrastructure, with no large terminal building. Because of its size and remote location, passenger facilities and scheduled services are limited, so travellers should confirm flight availability and local arrangements before departure.

Access to and from the airstrip is generally by boat or vehicle through Viru and nearby communities, with onward travel to other parts of New Georgia Island and the Western Province arranged locally.
