About Makira-Ulawa
Kirakira is the small provincial capital of Makira-Ulawa Province, located on the northern coast of Makira Island in the Solomon Islands. It serves as the administrative, commercial and transport hub for the province, with a compact township, a wharf, a market and the Ngorangora airstrip linking it to Honiara and nearby islands.
The town has a quiet, practical character shaped by subsistence farming and fishing rather than large-scale tourism. Makira is known for its many banana varieties, and copra, cocoa and logging are part of the wider provincial economy. Around Kirakira, rugged forested hills and rivers give the area a remote Melanesian feel.
Kirakira itself has modest landmarks, including government offices, churches, a small hospital and the busy local market. Its main appeal lies beyond the township: Makira's rainforest is known for endemic birds and biodiversity, while nearby Santa Ana, Santa Catalina and Ulawa islands offer traditional culture, beaches and reefs for snorkelling and diving.
The town remains an important gateway for development work, government business and resource-sector activity in the province, but visitor facilities are limited and advance planning is useful. Guesthouses and small lodges provide basic accommodation, and local boats and vehicles connect the town with coastal villages.
For travellers, Kirakira offers a more off-the-beaten-track Solomon Islands experience, combining administrative convenience with access to rainforest, reefs and island communities rarely visited by mass tourism.
