About Ngari Gunsa Airport
Ngari Gunsa Airport is the main civil aviation gateway to Shiquanhe and the remote Ngari Prefecture in western Tibet. It sits in Günsa Township roughly 45–50 km southwest of Shiquanhe town centre and is among the world's highest airports at about 4,274 metres above sea level.
Opened on 1 July 2010, the airport operates as a dual-use civil and military facility with a single passenger terminal and a 4,500-metre runway. It handles domestic flights linking Ngari with Lhasa, Kashgar and Ürümqi, giving travellers much faster access to far western Tibet.
Road connections make the trip to Shiquanhe in approximately one hour, with taxis, private transfers and pre-arranged vehicles providing the main onward transport; scheduled public transport is limited. The compact terminal offers basic passenger facilities, so visitors should allow extra time for security and permit checks and confirm road transfers in advance.
