Nanki–Shirahama Airport (SHM)

Nanki–Shirahama Airport is a regional airport serving Shirahama and the southern Wakayama Prefecture coast. It is the prefecture's only airport and the southernmost airport on Japan's main island of Honshu, functioning as a compact gateway to Shirahama Onsen, Adventure World and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes.

Opened in 1968, the airport was replaced by a new jet-capable facility in March 1996, and its runway was extended to 2,000 meters in 2000. A single two-story passenger terminal houses check-in and arrivals on the first floor, with security screening, shops, dining and the departure gate on the second floor. Japan Airlines currently connects the airport to Tokyo Haneda, with international charter flights operating during selected periods.

Located about 1.5 kilometers southeast of Shirahama town center, the airport sits roughly 65 kilometers south-southeast of Wakayama city. Buses, taxis, rental cars and highway coaches provide connections to Shirahama, Tanabe and onward destinations across the Kii Peninsula.
