The airport has a 4D-class flying area and a 3,600-metre-long, 60-metre-wide runway, together with a parallel taxiway and four apron areas providing around 109 aircraft stands. It has been used to support C919 test and research flights and, since late 2023, civil aircraft training operations.
Located about 20 km from central Nanchang, the airport is reached mainly by road. It is not the city's scheduled passenger airport; Nanchang Changbei International Airport (KHN) handles regular commercial flights.
As a specialized aviation facility, Yaohu Airport focuses on flight testing, aircraft manufacturing and general aviation support, with limited public passenger amenities compared with commercial airports.
