About Moengo Airstrip
Moengo Airstrip is a small public airstrip serving the town of Moengo in Suriname's Marowijne district. It is one of the oldest airstrips in the country, created in 1953 when aviation pioneer Ronald Kappel arranged for the strip to be laid out; the first landing was a Piper Cub "Colibri" arriving from Zorg en Hoop Airport in Paramaribo.
The airport operates a single grass runway, designated 09/27 and roughly 520 metres long, and mainly handles domestic and regional flights. It sits at the edge of Moengo, near the Cottica River, between Paramaribo and the border town of Albina.
Moengo is connected to the rest of Suriname by the East-West Highway, about 105 km from Paramaribo and around 40 km from Albina. This makes onward travel to the capital or towards the French Guiana border feasible by car, taxi or pre-arranged transfer.
As a small regional facility, the airstrip has limited passenger amenities compared with international airports, but it remains an important local connection for Moengo and eastern Suriname.
