About Minamidaito Airport
Minamidaito Airport serves Minamidaito Island, a remote island located roughly 360 km east of Okinawa's main island. As the island's only scheduled air gateway, it provides a vital link for residents and visitors, especially when rough seas prevent ships from docking.
The airport has a history dating back to a Japanese Navy airfield built in 1934. The current facility opened in July 1997 after the airport was relocated to its present site, and it is now managed by Okinawa Prefecture as a local airport with a 1,500-metre runway and operating hours from 08:00 to 18:00.
Its two-storey terminal houses a shop, a café and tourism information corner, and a free observation deck. Scheduled flights connect the island with Naha Airport, and since 2024 all regular services have operated directly to and from Naha.
The airport sits on the east side of the island, about 4–5 km from the main settlement. There is no scheduled public bus service, so most travelers use accommodation shuttles, pre-arranged taxis, rental cars, or rental bicycles to reach their destination.
