About Meghauli Airport
Meghauli Airport is a domestic airport serving Meghauli in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Chitwan District, Bagmati Province, Nepal. It is best known as a gateway to Chitwan National Park and the riverside resort area of Meghauli, a popular base for wildlife safaris and jungle lodges.
The airfield was built in 1961 for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip to Chitwan. For years it supported tourism flights bringing guests to jungle lodges, but regular operations stopped in 2011 after a government policy barred hotels from operating inside the national park. Since then, the airport has mainly handled charter flights and helicopters, and the Nepali Army has used the strip for training.
Located about 24 km south of Bharatpur, the airport is reached by road through the Chitwan area. It has a single grass runway and a small terminal, and runway upgrade work has been underway to improve the airfield for charter and tourism traffic.
Because scheduled services are limited, most visitors arrive via Bharatpur Airport and continue by road to Meghauli, Sauraha and Chitwan National Park. Meghauli Airport remains useful for charter and helicopter arrivals directly to the area's resorts and safari camps.
