About Mawella Lagoon Seaplane Base
Mawella Lagoon Seaplane Base is a compact water aerodrome serving Dikwella and the surrounding southern coast of Sri Lanka. Rather than a conventional runway, it uses the sheltered waters of Mawella Lagoon for amphibious seaplane landings and departures.
The base is primarily served by Cinnamon Air, which operates scheduled and charter seaplane links between the south coast and Colombo, including connections from Bandaranaike International Airport. The commercial seaplane operation developed in the early 2010s and gave Dikwella a direct air route to the capital, reducing what was previously a long road journey to a short scenic flight.
Passenger facilities are intentionally minimal, with a simple shore-side waiting area and a pontoon pier instead of a full terminal building. Arrivals and departures are quick, with luggage handled directly between the aircraft and the shore.
The water aerodrome lies on the edge of Dikwella, close to the beach towns and resorts of the deep south. Tuk-tuks, hotel transfers and private vehicles connect the lagoon with Dikwella town, Tangalle, Hiriketiya and Matara, while the nearest railway station is at Beliatta.
