About Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is the second international airport in Sri Lanka and the main air gateway to the Hambantota district and the country's southern coast. Opened in 2013, it was developed as the country's first greenfield airport and is located near the town of Mattala, north of Hambantota.
The airport has a single passenger terminal and a 3,500-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft including the Airbus A380. Its terminal includes check-in counters, departure and arrival areas, customs and immigration facilities, a lounge, dining and retail services.
Located roughly 18 km north of Hambantota, the airport serves travellers heading to destinations such as Tangalle, Yala National Park, Kataragama and the southern coastal resort areas. There is no regular public bus service at the airport, so most passengers continue by taxi, pre-arranged private transfer or chauffeur-driven car.
With its modern terminal, runway capacity and connections to the southern region, the airport provides a practical gateway for visitors arriving in and departing from southern Sri Lanka.
