Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is the main international airport serving Kano and the wider northern Nigeria region. With operations dating back to 1936, it is the oldest airport in Nigeria and was originally a Royal Air Force station before the country gained independence.
Located north of central Kano, the airport connects the city to domestic destinations such as Lagos and Abuja and to international routes, including a significant share of flights serving Muslim pilgrimages to Mecca and the large Sudanese community in Kano. The facility serves both civilian and military traffic, sharing the site with a Nigerian Air Force base, and has separate international and domestic terminals supported by two runways.
The airport is roughly 12 km from the city centre and is reachable by road, taxi, private transfers and rental cars, typically in around 30 minutes depending on traffic. Recent investment has brought a newer domestic terminal and an additional terminal complex to improve capacity and the passenger experience.
