The airport sits about 2 km west of central Khatgal and roughly 600 km northwest of Ulaanbaatar. It has a single gravel runway, designated 15/33 and about 2,400 m long, with a compact passenger building completed in 2006/2007.
Because scheduled commercial services are limited, many travelers reach the Lake Khövsgöl area by road or by flying to Mörön Airport, around 90–100 km to the south, and continuing overland. Road connections link the airport with Khatgal, lakeside camps and provincial routes.
The airport's small scale keeps arrivals and departures straightforward, and transfers should generally be arranged in advance. It functions mainly as a convenient entry point for visitors heading to Khatgal and the surrounding lake region.
