Uvs

Uvs stretches across western Mongolia, where open steppe, sand dunes and the vast saltwater reach of Uvs Lake meet the foothills of the Altai. Its protected basin, nomadic herding traditions and mixed Kazakh, Tuvan and Mongol heritage give the area a character found nowhere else in the country.

About Uvs

Ulaangom is the capital of Uvs Province in western Mongolia and the main gateway to the Uvs Lake Basin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set at around 935 metres above sea level and close to the Russian border, the town serves as a compact provincial centre surrounded by steppe, salt lakes and mountain ranges.

Known locally as 'Red Valley' and framed by the Kharkhiraa and Turgen mountains, Ulaangom has a distinctly regional character shaped by Dörbed and Oirat nomadic traditions. The provincial museum displays local wildlife, Buddhist art and ethnographic collections, while the main square and monuments reflect the area's recent history.

The town itself is small and walkable, with a central market, simple restaurants, guesthouses and a handful of shops around its core. Just north of the centre, Red Mountain (Ulaan Uul) offers a short walk and views over the town, while Uvs Lake, one of Mongolia's largest lakes, lies within easy driving distance.

Ulaangom's economy and daily life are tied to livestock, agriculture and cross-border trade with nearby Russia. The town hosts seasonal events and the provincial Naadam festival, with horse racing, wrestling and archery, and serves as a supply point for journeys into the surrounding basin and mountains.

For travellers, Ulaangom is both a practical base and a destination in its own right: it offers access to Uvs Lake, Kharkhiraa and Turgen mountain treks, nomadic culture and wildlife, while remaining a quiet, working Mongolian provincial centre rather than a busy tourist hub.

Uvs Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Summer from June to early September is the best season, with warm days suitable for visiting Uvs Lake, hiking in the Kharkhiraa and Turgen mountains and attending Naadam. Winters are long and extremely cold, and spring and autumn can be windy with sudden temperature changes.

How to Get Around

Ulaangom is small enough to explore on foot, and local taxis are available for short trips across town. For Uvs Lake, mountain valleys and other rural sites, most visitors use hired four-wheel-drive vehicles, guides or shared jeeps, since public transport outside the town is limited.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is concentrated in the town centre, ranging from simple guesthouses and small hotels to local apartments. For closer access to Uvs Lake and the mountains, travellers can also stay in ger camps or guest lodges in the surrounding countryside.

Food & Drink

Dining in Ulaangom is straightforward and centred on Mongolian staples such as mutton, dairy products, buuz, khuushuur and milk tea. Small local restaurants, cafés and the central market provide everyday meals, with limited international options.
